Leela is the motoring aficionado in the family, having been membership secretary for the Classic Car Club of Hong Kong for many years, and the owner of a Datsun Fair Lady and a couple of MGs that I know of. But this is Hong Kong and finding parts is always a matter of shipping and finding good mechanics is always a matter of luck, so ten years ago she sold them all and we bought a Mazda MX-5 which is still running fine. These photos were taken at one of the MG Car Club exhibitions, this one in Taikoo Place, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong. The weather was perfect so I started photographing bits and pieces of cars -- mainly because photographing whole cars proved to be impossible with all the people and distracting backgrounds. After looking at the MG photos, I started this gallery because Hong Kong is one of the luxury car capitals of the world. We have one of the highest ownership rates for Mercedes and there are plenty of Rolls Royces, Lambourghinis, Aston Martins, Ferraris and the like all over the place -- including handicapped parking places. And thanks to domestic helpers and chauffeurs, the average car -- luxury or otherwise -- is usually spotless. So I figure since I'm not owning them, I might as well start photographing them. More to come, as they say. |
